CENTRAL PARK
CREATING A LIVELY NEW URBAN COMMUNITY & TOWN CENTER AT ITÄKESKUS
A NEW IDENTITY AS ONE OF THE MOST VIBRANT URBAN CENTERS IN GREATER HELSINKI
From a hard, dispersed and very car-based environment shaped by the motorways and a large shopping mall to a denser, more convivial, mixed-used ”urban village” where people are attracted to the compelling lifestyle – urban – cosmopolitan – sustainable – easy to reach and exciting – close to nature!
TAKING THE SPIRIT & REALITY OF ITÄKESKUS AND LEVERAGING IT INTO A STRONGER AND UNIQUE IDENTITY AS AN URBAN DESTINATION.
DEPLOYING CLEAR STRUCTURING PLACE MAKING ELEMENTS TO BRING A HUMAN-SCALED URBAN, WALKABLE, GREEN AND VIBRANT URBAN LIFE TO THE COMMUNITY
THE NEW ITÄKESKUS ”URBAN VILLAGE”
Managing the various level differences and creating a walkable and connected urban public realm is one of the main achievements of this proposal.
New Urban village Tori in front of the Maamerkki tower
This will become the center point of the ”village” and of the community which will emerge in the new Itäkeskus – a small scale town in the midst of the capital metropolis – with cafés, terraces, small shops, places to meet outdoor, play, organize events, kindergartens in close proximity to the parks, and so on.
A revitalized & expanded Cultural Hub on the North side – developing around the existing Puhos and celebrate the area as a multi-cultural hub where international inspirations meet Finnish traditions in a modern, exciting and innovating ambiance which will turn it into a unique destination in Finland.
Our proposal transforms the Puhos area and lifts it as a strong, positive and attractive urban ethnic hub for food from the world, cultural experiences and greater integration of all to society.
Integrated local transport & access network which prioritize pedestrians and public transit. – we take a strong position in transforming the area from a car-based town to a walkable and sustainable urban village. Pedestrian access across all parts of the areas, a robust network of bike lanes, integrated tram and metro connections for longer distance commutes and parking spaces planned at the perimeter and along the highway with mostly “shared space” streets.
