EAST CENTRAL PARK
A new East Central Park is created for East Helsinki by raising this section of the Itäväylä road into a “pipe”, a fully glazed bridge. This frees up some 50,000 m2 of the current noisy traffic zone to create a safe and quiet park area for pedestrians, cyclists and recreation. The solution also allows apartments to be built in the immediate vicinity. This peaceful central park forms the lungs of Itis, establishing an urban living room for a wide range of user groups.
The north and south sides of Itäkeskus are connected via Easton Garden, an indoor street resembling a winter garden. This will be the functional heart of the new Itis. In addition, a combined pedestrian/cyclist route below the metro tunnel level is planned to link the new central park to the renewed Puhos shopping centre and directly to the metro station. This north-south passage, open 24/7 and lined with a variety of services and shops, underlines the multicultural character of Itäkeskus.
