Helsinki East Urban Center. Reclaim the Streets!
The project aims at making space for people: Highways are transformed into boulevards with reduced dimensions, greenery, pedestrian walks, cycle-lanes, and stormwater-swales – framed by powerful urban architecture. Like that ca. 60.000m² of former street-space are reclaimed and turned into built-up and green areas.
Mobility Hubs offer new modes of transportation: multimodal, seamless and safe! Mobility Hubs are located close to stations and major car routes. They combine car-parking with public transport (bus, train), sharing systems (bikes, scooters), mobility services (mechanic, shop) and other urban programs (retail, housing, co-working).
The new centre on both sides of Itäväylä-Boulevard is formed by mixed-use buildings (offices, creative businesses, retail, housing) with the central mobility hub also serving as an innovation lab. The surrounding neighbourhoods combine housing with other urban functions. Local Hubs offer mobility and community services – parking, kindergarden – and serve as energy centre. A loop ties together the whole area with bridges as crosslinks on level 0 and +1. Swales, green roofs, water squares, detention basins etc. are inherent part of the urban design – making water an experience!
