In the Gardens of New Babylon
As the future urban center of eastern Helsinki, Itäkeskus must maintain the delicate balance between retaining its existing patchwork of unique urbanity and diversity while at the same time densifying and developing new services and opportunities. The car-oriented suburbia that has dominated these fringes of Helsinki have pushed what streetlife there is up onto the rooftops, bridges and into shopping centers. Instead of competing with the frenetic highways below we propose to embrace the existing raised streetlife to form a new vibrant public urban space between the buildings, realising the potential of the modernist planning principles that formed the area.
